Ouray Ice Park: 3-Day Ice Climbing Independence Course

From your first swings to self-sufficiency, this three-day course will help you grow your skills and competence on ice.

    Join us for three days of ice climbing in the Ouray Ice Park. In this course we’ll focus on building the competence you need to start climbing more independently or pursue bigger objectives around your neck of the woods, Telluride, Silverton, Alaska, and beyond. Whether you're just getting started or refining your systems, we’ll focus on foundational techniques, technical ropework, and partnership building—all tailored to your personal goals.

    More time means more reps, more learning, and more trust, in your technical systems, ice movement and your partners. You’ll leave with a stronger foundation, new belaytionships, and the skills to begin climbing more independently.

    • 4:1 guest to guide ratio 

    • Climbing harness, helmet, ice tools, crampons

    • $10/pp of rent paid to the Boys and Girls Club of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe

    Not Included

    • Personal snacks/food

    • Personal climbing clothing and equipment per the equipment list

    • Ice Climbing Boots (if you don’t own them let us know- we might be able to round some up!)

    • Travel and rescue insurance (highly recommended!)

    • Lodging in Colorado

    • Ouray Ice Park Membership (encouraged to support the OIP and required to gain early entry to the park)

Kick off Ouray Ice Fest with Ice Breaker, a 2-day clinic in the Ouray Ice Park with Moxie Mountain Guides and guest instructor Margo Talbot. You can sign up for both days, day 1 only, or day 2 only—whatever fits your goals and your week.

  • Kick off Ice Fest week with 2 days of climbing, skill-building, and a touch of Margo Talbot’s signature magic. Join Moxie’s IFMGA Guides and Margo for a vertical adventure that blends expert coaching with present-moment awareness. This clinic will be tailored to all abilities and anyone ready to take their climbing, and their life, to the next level. Together, we’ll sharpen your technique, clean up your systems, and help you stay fully in the moment while you’re breaking through icy boundaries.

    Join us for day 1, day 2, or both days for the full experience.

    We’ll blend Moxie’s high-end technical instruction with Margo’s “ice odyssey” approach: lots of climbing, practical coaching, and staying in the moment while you swing tools, kick crampons, and figure out what’s possible on vertical ice.

    Day 1: Women Only
    A women-centered day with a supportive, get-after-it crew.
    Never swung tools or feeling a little rusty? We’ve got you. You’ll learn how to stay warm (yes, it’s a skill), move efficiently, and manage the basic rope systems that make the whole thing work. Already have mileage? We’ll fine-tune your movement, clean up your systems, and help you climb smoother and with more intention.

    Day 2: Everyone Welcome- No Jerks Allowed
    A mixed-group day for good humans who want to keep leveling up. We’ll tailor the day to the group and your individual goals: ice movement, anchor building, top-belay systems, efficient rope work, and applying Margo’s awareness-based approach so you can climb better and have more fun out there.

    Come for one day or both—either way, you’ll get quality instruction, plenty of swings, and a good hang. Climb with Moxie.

    All abilities and body sizes are welcome. Jan 19th- Women, Jan 20th- NJA (No Jerks Allowed). (Min 3, Max 12 climbers)

  • INCLUDED

    • Instruction from a guide working within the AMGA Scope of Practice

    • Ability to borrow technical equipment (ice tools, crampons, helmet and harness)

    • $40 per person contribution to the Ouray Ice Park

    • Rent paid to the Indigenous peoples $10 per person contribution to the Boys and Girls Club of the Southern Ute

    NOT INCLUDED

    • Travel to and from southwest Colorado

    • Ice climbing boots- available to rent @ Ouray Mountain Sports

    • Personal clothing and equipment per our equipment list- including boots (Just ask if there is gear you need that will induce undue financial hardship)

    • A  gear card to demo gear at the Ouray Ice Fest (Jan 23-25, 2026)

    • Accommodations in Colorado

    • Travel and/or rescue insurance is highly recommended

    • Customary guide gratuity

    • Costs incurred due to evacuation or unplanned departure from the area due to illness or other problems

    • Costs incurred as a result of delays beyond the control of Moxie

    • Costs as a result of force majeure
